Dr. des. Simin Fadaee (simin.fadaee@cms.hu-berlin.de) bietet die Studienfachberatung für Südostasien-Studien (BA) an.
Prof. Dr. Houben ist verantwortlich für die Master-StudentInnen der Südostasien-Studien (Termin-Vereinbarung über das Sekretariat).
Magister-StudentInnen kontaktieren bitte direkt die DozentInnen, bei denen Prüfungsleistungen erbracht werden sollen.

Spaces of Coexistence: Civility, Hybridity, and Interculturalism

At a time when violent conflict and civil strife emanating from ethnic and religious divisions are making the world we live in increasingly unsafe and insecure, lessons of policy import can be gained from analyses of instances and places where people of different ethnicity and/or religion coexist and cohabit in peace and harmony.
Focusing on Malaysia, the paper will discuss the effectiveness and virtues of different forms of civility - quotidian, organic, imposed and sly - in the context of inter-ethnic relations.
It has been claimed that civility helps to forge and foster inter-cultural peaceful and cordial relations. The paper will also address the question of how might interculturalism and cultural hybridity or syncreticisms work as antidotes to divisive and exclusionary tendencies, stemming from essentialism and communal chauvinism.
