TEACHING

One of the main aims of the BPI is to enable a comprehensive study in Biophysics and Bioinformatics. The members and their groups working in respective fields set the basis for first-hand teaching and the continuous improvement of the Diploma course Biophysics at the Humboldt University Berlin to meet the state of the art in Biophysics and Bioinfomatics. The Diploma course Biophysics which already has been existing for about 25 years at Humboldt University Berlin educates students in the main fields of Biophysics based on a comprehensive knowledge in biology, mathematics, physics, informatics and chemistry. To meet the requirements of scientific challenges specific emphasise is given to a strong interdisciplinary experimental as well as theory-oriented teaching. Furthermore, courses in Molecular and Cell Biology provides knowledge and expertise indispensable for modern Biophysics and Bioinformatics. Presently a limited number of about 25 students inscribe once a year. This number is intended to increase within the next years.

The study program in Biophysics consists of various periods:
the Basic Studies (Grundstudium) (four semesters), the Advanced Studies (Hauptstudium) (four semesters) and a period to prepare the diploma thesis. The Grundstudium covers courses in the fields of Informatics, Chemistry and all main biological fields as well as extended courses in Mathematics and Physics. Importantly, already during this initial period, students will be introduced into the field of Theoretical Biophysics and Biology.
In the Hauptstudium the students focus on different fields which are:

Molecular and Cellular Biology During this second period, individual and practical teaching is practised in experimental and theory-oriented courses. During this period students must train their scientific working in small research projects.

Finally students have to write a diploma thesis about a proposed topic in biophysics.
