When, how, and why (not) to preregister
Preregistration involves specifying the hypotheses, methods, and data analysis plans of a research project before data collection or analysis. In response to the replication crisis, this practice aims to enhance research credibility and replicability. However, several questions remain: How effective is preregistration in achieving this goal? Do only certain types of studies benefit, or can it sometimes even be harmful? In this workshop, we will explore these questions by providing historical context, reviewing empirical evidence on the benefits and implementation of preregistration, and discussing theoretical foundations alongside practical challenges across various study designs. We will conclude with discussions of examples from the literature and participants' research. While no prior knowledge is required, the workshop may be particularly interesting for researchers with experience in writing or reviewing preregistrations.
