The computer has a batery powered external memory card.
It was presented by the Atari Company and having the size of a VHS cassette and the weight of just few hundred gramms HPC-004 became a predecessor of PDAs. The computer is in most aspects compatible with IBM PC that made it universal. With its built-in programs that could be started with the function keys HPC-004 could be used for storing addresses and managing appointment dates, typing a text and processing tables. With external software it could be used for programming, playing games, calculation of taxes and calculations using formulas.
The PC has a full keyboard as a typewriter which despite its small size was very convenient in use. The monochrome LCD has a resolution 240x64 pixels. As a CPU it uses the energy efficient version of Intel 8088 that was named 80C88 with the clock frequency 4.9MHz. The RAM size was 128KB and the HDD size was 256KB. The built in DIP-DOS (MS-DOS 2.11) compatible OS made possible the use of MS-DOS compatible applications.
As external memory Atari offered memory cards powered with a flat lithium battery (Bee-Cards) with memory capacities 32-128KB. Through an external adapter HPC-004 could be equipped with a parallel and serial ports and external memory of 512KB. All external devices could be attached to the port at the right side of the PC, which made it less portable. The power was supplied from three AA batteries, that can last for several days or stationary from an AC/DC adaptor. | |
