Bezeichnung für eine Äußerung, die entweder eine Reaktion auf eine andere Frage darstellt, z.B.
(1)
a. Wann kommst du? – Wann ich komme? oder
b. Kommst du morgen? – Ob ich morgen komme?
oder eine Stelle, die im Diskurskontext als bekannt gelten kann, als offen thematisiert (z.B. weil sie akustisch nicht verständlich war), z.B.
(2) Ich komme morgen. – Du kommst WANN?
In der Literatur bis Mitte der 1990er Jahre zu Echofragen werden funktionale Aspekte kaum erörtert und die Auseinandersetzung mit syntaktischen bzw. phonologischen Eigenschaften steht im Vordergrund, wobei sog. Echo-Ergänzungsfragen zentral erörtert werden.
M. Reis (1991) unterscheidet hierbei 3 Gruppen von Echo-w-Sätzen:
(i) Echo-w-Sätze mit der für Deklarativsätze typischen Verb-Zweit-Struktur, z.B. Du kommst WANN?,
(ii) Echo-w-Sätze mit den Strukturmustern nicht-deklarativer Satztypen, z.B. Komm WANN?,
(iii) Echo-w-Sätze, die keine normale Satzentsprechung zu haben scheinen, z.B. Du hast ihm WAS?
Echofragen sind sprachliche Äußerungsformen, welche eine Vorgängeräußerung aufgreifen, weshalb sie als Untergruppe von Zitatstrukturen wie unter (3) analysiert werden können, wie dies in der jüngeren Literatur zum Thema fokussiert wird (vgl. Noh (1995; 1998; 2000), Wilson (1999), Escandell-Vidal (2002), Iwata (2003)):

Die Definition von Echofragen, ihre Abgrenzung (z.B. von Nachfragen zur Verständnissicherung, von Rückfragen zum Ausdruck einer Bewertungs- oder Wissensdivergenz oder von Konstruktionsabbrüchen) bzw. die Eingrenzung des Phänomens ist in der Literatur allerdings ausgesprochen widersprüchlich; zur Diskussion vgl.
