lat. evidentia 'Ersichtlichkeit'; auch: Quotative Modalität
Semantisch-pragmatische Beschreibungsperspektive, welche sich auf die Herkunft des Wissens eines Sprechers über die Geltung des durch seine Äußerung ausgedrückten Sachverhaltes in der aktuellen Sprechsituation bezieht: Evidentialitätsunterschiede in der Bedeutung von Sätzen beziehen sich auf die Quelle der Information, aus welcher der Sprecher Kenntnis über eine Proposition erlangt hat. Während epistemische >Modalität Bezug auf das nimmt, was ein Sprecher für wahr hält, nimmt die Evidentialität Bezug auf die Evidenz, über die ein Sprecher verfügt (vgl. de Haan 1999). Mit entsprechenden sprachlichen Ausdrücken relativiert ein Sprecher seine Verantwortlichkeit in Bezug auf die Wahrheit der Proposition in der betreffenden Sprechsituation (vgl. auch >epistemische Relativierung).
Hierbei kann zwischen direkter Evidentialität und indirekter Evidentialität unterschieden werden (vgl. z.B. zur Diskussion dieser Differenzierung im Bezug auf das Französische Kotschi (1998)): Direkte Evidentialität nimmt Bezug auf die unmittelbare sinnliche Evidenz eines Sprechers (z.B. visuell oder auditiv; vgl. z.B. de Haan (2007)), indirekte Evidentialität bezieht sich auf die nicht unmittelbar sinnliche Evidenz eines Sprechers, das heißt auf solche Kenntnisse, welche entweder
a) Äußerungen eines anderen Sprechers entnommen sind (quotative Evidentialität) oder
b) aufgrund von Deduktion bzw.
aufgrund einer von bestimmten Indizien ausgehenden Schlussfolgerungsprozedur abgeleitet sind
(inferentielle Evidentialität; >Inferential)
Für verschiedene Sprachen sind differenzierte Evidentialitätssysteme konstatierbar, das heißt, Sätze erfordern in solchen Sprachen im Allgemeinen eine formale (morphologische, syntaktische oder phonologisch-phonetische) Markierung der Evidentialität (vgl. Kiefer (1994: 2517), Palmer (1986, 27, 51ff.)), in welchem Falle man auch von 'Evidentialis' als formaler Kategorie zum Ausruck von Evidentialität spricht. Nicht selten kodieren entsprechende Paradigmen allerdings auch weitere epistemische Relativierungen wie z.B. 'Zweifel', >Debitiv, 'Redewiedergabe', >Quotativ oder >Admirativ.
So kodieren nach Rule (1977) und Floyd (1999: Kapitel 5) im Quechua die Suffixe -m(i) 'eigenes Wissen', -s(i) 'Wissen vom Hörensagen', -ch(a) 'Vermutungen'. Foley (1986) konstatiert für das Fasu (Neuguinea) die unter (1) genannten morphologisch relevanten Oppositionen:

Ähnlich komplexe Evidentialitätssysteme werden für verschiedene Amazonassprachen expliziert. Für die in diesem Zusammenhang ausgesprochen populär gewordene Sprache Pirahã, die von Everett (1986) umfangreich beschrieben wird, konstatiert D. Everett in jüngeren Arbeiten das so genannte Immediacy of Experience Principle (IEP; vgl. Everett (2007: 4)), aus welchem er unter anderem ableitet, dass es im Pirahã keine syntaktische Rekursion gäbe,
"since embedded sentences are not assertions ..., they cannot be used. To avoid these, the grammar of Pirahã will not have rules of the type"

Declarative Pirahã utterances contain only assertions related directly to the moment of speech, either experienced (i.e. seen, overheard, deduced, etc. - as per the range of Pirahã evidentials, as in Everett (1986, 289)) by the speaker or as witnessed by someone alive during the lifetime of the speaker.

Im Deutschen dienen dem Ausdruck der Evidentialität z.B. Adverbiale wie in Beispiel (3), Partikeln wie in (4) (vgl. zu einer entsprechenden Explikation der Diskurspartikel wohl Zimmermann (2004; 2007)), bestimmte Satzeinbettungen wie in (5), (6) und (9), sowie Konstruktionen mit den Modalverben sollen als 'allgemeine Annahme' (7) oder wollen als 'Behauptung/Annahme eines anderen' (8), bzw. Konstruktionen mit dem Konjunktiv I (9), wobei die Quelle der Evidenz explizit bezeichnet werden kann (vgl. (8) und (9)):
