This was the theme of an international conference at Berlin Humboldt University in May 2004 which marked the successful conclusion two major programmes: “The Baltic Sea Area Studies: Northern Dimension of Europe” or BaltSeaNet programme that began in 2000, and the Baltic Sea School (Ostsee-Kolleg) project launched in 2001.

The conference proceedings, which have been published by the Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag (ISBN 3-8305-1082-9, 34 €), are designed to summarize and evaluate the findings and conclusions of both programmes, with special emphasis on the socio-cultural foundations, political institutions, and economic transformation of the Baltic Sea region.
