The University of Latvia, Riga, offers a two year programme providing an excellent opportunity to obtain an interdisciplinary Master's degree in Baltic Sea region issues. The programme offers the opportunity to develop competences in the humanities, social, and environmental disciplines related to Baltic Sea region countries. The need for such competences has arisen due to the continuing integration among Baltic Sea region countries and, with the rise of their cultural, economic and political importance within the European Union and the world. On completion of the programme, the master's graduates are then qualified to continue their academic research at doctoral level and/or to pursue careers in public service or private enterprise.

All students have to pass a general module that encompasses research methodology, geographical, cultural, and historical definitions of the Baltic sea region. During the first, second and third semesters, students take specialization modules as well as elective courses. Strongly encouraged are language learning courses, offering different level of study of languages functional in the Baltic area One semester is recommended to be completed at a partner university. The final semester in the programme is to be devoted to completion of the Master's thesis.

The Master's degree in the Baltic Sea Region Studies will be awarded upon successful completion of courses and a successful defence of thesis.

The quality of the programme is ensured by professional, internationally recognized members of academic staff.

Partner universities: University of Turku in Finland, the University of Tartu in Estonia, and the Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania. This partnership will enable student mobility within the programme as, at least one semester could be taken at a partner university.

Amount of credits: 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

Standard period of study: 4 semesters, students are encouraged to take at least one semester at a partner university (see below)

Language of Instruction: English

Admission requirements: the applicant to Master degree studies must hold a recognized Bachelor's degree or be able to provide evidence of an equivalent level education. A proficiency in English language is required. For non-native speakers, acceptable minimal English proficiency requirements are American Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL 550 (or computer based 213), British Council International English Language Testing System IELTS 6.5, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English - C, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - B.
