Turku University offers a Baltic Sea Region Studies programme at the advanced undergraduate / Master’s level applying an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the societies, cultures and economics of the region surrounding the Baltic Sea. The Baltic littoral has a new status in the process of European integration, and the programme explores its very varied societies from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

The language of instruction and required reading material is English.

The programme offers a Master's programme and non-degree studies. The non-degree studies are addressed to exhange students. They do not lead to a degree at the University of Turku, but they are complementary studies to be used at the home university at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

NON DEGREE STUDIES

The non-degree studies offer an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the societies, cultures and economics of the region surrounding the Baltic Sea. The Baltic littoral is increasingly involved in the process of European integration, and the programme explores its very varied societies from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

The non degree studies are especially addressed to exchange students. They do not lead to a degree at the University of Turku, but they are complementary studies to be used at the home university at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Language of instruction and required reading material is English.

Pre-requisites: At least two years of university studies and a special interest in the Baltic Sea Area in the fields available. See: how to apply.

The non degree programme will be given in a new form starting September 2005. The total amount of courses offered will be at least 25 ECTS.

History and Culture
Languages and Communication
Society and Environment

MASTER’S PROGRAMME

The new Master's programme will start in Autumn 2005: The programme has a multidisciplinary approach. Its contents are historical and current political, economic and cultural developments in the Baltic Sea Region, national and international co-operation in and among the countries in the region as well as the region’s perspectives in the context of European regionalisation and globalisation, especially in regard to the processes starting now after the EU-enlargement. These processes of economic and political entanglement and region-building have to be scientifically observed and analysed. Perspectives on politics and culture in the region are needed as well.

The main fields of study: The modules at the University of Turku cover fields in Contemporary History, Landscape Studies, Urban Geography, Cultural History, Cultural Studies, Comparative Art Studies. In the thesis a student can concentrate on one for these.

Programme goals: The program aims to prepare students for postgraduate studies, independent research work, as well as career activity within a European framework by qualifying students for interdisciplinary scholarly work and research qualifying students for intercultural communication and co-operation within a European framework the imparting of knowledge on both the historical and the current political, economic and cultural conditions of the Baltic Sea Region in regard to the regionalisation of Europe, and globalisation the imparting of knowledge on the changing patterns of national and international co-operation among the states surrounding the Baltic Sea the imparting of knowledge on political, economic and other forms of co-operation as well as on the region’s future perspectives.

Duration and ECTS: 2 years (4 semesters), 120 ECTS

Structure

1st semester

Common studies:

  • Interdisciplinary introduction module 8 ECTS
  • Methodology module 8 ECTS
  • Advanced academic writing skills 4 ECTS

2nd and 3rd semester

Studies according to the individual study plan, and specialisation at home and partner university. Studies are arranged and offered in interdisciplinary, thematic modules (10-15 ECTS each) by partners according to the special expertise of each partner university. At least one of the two specialisation semesters has to be completed at a partner university (see below).

Thesis (finalizing the thesis; working on the thesis begins latest during the 2nd semester). Thesis 40 ECTS.

How to apply? If you have a at least three years Bachelor, Master or equivalent diploma (university degree) in Social Sciences, Humanities or Cultural Sciences, and a very good knowledge of English, you can apply for the Master programme.
