Pite Saami fieldwork tutorial

This tutorial is intended to give the participants the opportunity to gain experience in realistic field work situations, particularly involving Saami languages. Pite Saami will be used as a trial language. Topics covered shall include lexicography, methodology for ascertaining linguistic phenomena (phonogical, morphological and syntactic features), collecting and annotating texts, as well as practical considerations for working with speakers and technical equipment in the field. Work done in this tutorial is intended to complement skills aquired in the database session (run by C. Gerstenberger) and other technical demonstrations, particularly for creating educational materials (run by L. Antonsen). Students will be expected to complete related tasks using data gathered and methods learned in the tutorial. In preparation for the class, students are requested to download the free linguistic annotation software ELAN and the CHARIS SIL Unicode font. Other software listed below may also be of interest, as well as the bibliography. Students are also asked to bring a laptop computer and any audio and/or video recording equipment they may have to Bodø. English will be used as the lingua franca, and knowledge of Swedish or Norwegian may be useful, but not required.

A tentative schedule can be found here.
