Conference

A century after Strindberg finished his epochmaking play Ett Drömspel the 15th International Strindberg Conference will be held in Berlin – a place of some considerable importance for August Strindberg. It was Max Reinhardt’s staging of his plays there that founded Strindberg’s international fame. In Berlin he joined the group of artists that met at the Schwarzes Ferkel  and with Edvard Munch he exhibited some of his paintings in the Freie Ausstellung.
In recent years the intermediality of Strindberg’s work has been a major topic focus of academic research. Apart from writing, Strindberg experimented with different media such as painting and photography. His experiments with the laterna magica and the camera, his self-representation in front of the camera and his ideas regarding the projection of stage designs can be related to his literary work. Even if Strindberg was not a pioneer of modern Scandinavian art, his dedication to the „new“ media of his time shows his affinity to the Avantgarde.

Another field of research are the adaptations of Strindberg’s works for film and television. The new medium film shows an early interest in Strindberg. In 1912 filmproductions of Fröken Julie und Fadren were made in Sweden. A few years later three other films – one by Ernst Lubitsch, and with Asta Nielsen und Harriet Bosse in the leading parts – had their world premiers in Berlin. Several recent TV and movie adaptations show the continued fascination of Strindberg’s work for a contemporary audience.
