The following maps are supposed to aid an understanding of the complexity of interwoven organizational structures that make up the institutional framework of what can be understood as "Europe".

Maps represent the state of affairs in 2009 and have been simplified. Smaller countries (Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco, Vatican City) do not appear on the maps. Suggestions welcome. Compiled by Philipp Kneis.
