The historic relationship between Muslims and Tibetans in Gansu and Qinghai (Northwest China) is the main topic of this research project. The relation between Muslims and Tibetans is strongly influenced by their mutual trade interests. This interest is also part of the intense menage a trois between the Tibetans, Muslims and the Han Chinese in Northwest China. Especially in times of local unrest during the Muslim uprisings in 1862-1873 and 1895, during the Era of Muslim warlords till 1949, the tensions between these different ethnic groups became apparent. The planned monography tries to deepen the understanding of the origins of this bloodstained conflict in this strategical important region. Up till now only few publications dealt with the events although there exist some chinese and tibetan monographies. The fieldreports of missionaries and western researchers will be included in our monography.
