We look forward to welcoming you to the official online opening of the exhibition Happy in Berlin? English Writers in the City - Politics, Psychoanalysis, and Pleasure on Tuesday, 22nd June at 6.00 p.m.
This event will begin with a welcome address by Jill Gallard, CMG, British Ambassador to Germany followed by a welcome address by Professor Dr.-Ing. Sabine Kunst, President of HU and Spokesperson of the Berlin University Alliance.
The panel debate will feature Professor Laura Marcus (Oxford), Professor Liliana Feierstein (HU), and Professor em. Patricia Duncker (Manchester). The debate will be chaired by the exhibition curators Professor Stefano Evangelista (Oxford) and Professor Gesa Stedman (HU). Our online event focuses in particular on the role of the British Embassy, Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (renamed Humboldt-Universität in 1949), and the Berlin Psychoanalytical Institute as key places in which English writers experienced Weimar Berlin.
Happy in Berlin? English Writers in the City is a joint Oxford-Berlin project. It reassesses the Berlin myth in three parallel exhibitions at Grimm-Zentrum (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), Literaturhaus Berlin, and the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and in the book of the same title. The project website allows you to explore Berlin during the 1920s and 30s in the company of English writers including Virginia Woolf, Christopher Isherwood, and Alix Strachey: https://happy-in-berlin.org/. Both exhibitions in Berlin can be visited from 15th June onwards.
