Shifting cultivation in Northern Laos

Shifting cultivation, or so-called slash & burn farming, is still widely practiced in SE Asia and Africa. This photo was taken during a field trip under I-REDD+, a EU FR7 project, in 2011.  The widely spread fire and smoke in Indonesia this year were mainly caused by the burning practice. Yet, there is still an ongoing debate on the social value and ecosystem services linked to shifting cultivation.
