My m² Earth: A collaborative photo project on global change
The Earth’s surface covers approximately 510 Billion square meters. Most of them are affected by mankind, today more than ever before. Against this background, My m² Earth raises the question, on which spot of Earth people identify local aspects of global change within their everyday life.
The term m² Earth relates to an exhibition at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin from 2014, where global change was represented by two artists in a series of 1×1 m photographs. Following up on this, we invite you and your colleagues to upload own photographs and comment on their thematic and visual messages. The aim of this project is a bilingual dialogue that combines visual language and thematic exchange.
Starting on 16 October 2015 and taking place before, during and after the 2. German Future Earth Summit in Berlin from 28-29 January 2016, this online exhibition will grow continuously. The results will be presented at the conference itself and within a follow up publication.
Among all contributions a small prize will be awarded: The three photographers of the most interesting pictures receive one of the satellite images showing the Earth taken by the Satellitenbildwerkstatt albedo39.
The project was initiated by the Integrative Research Institute on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems (IRI THESys) at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, in cooperation with the German Committee Future Earth.
What kind of images are we looking for?
Whether taken with a cell phone, a compact or a SLR camera, the technical professionality of the submitted images is not important, what matters is the photographer’s personal view. We are interested in individual motifs of change located in your daily life: be it at home or at work, when shopping or walking the dog, on vacation, during field work or on a business trip – e. g. on your way to the German Future Earth Summit.
As global change doesn’t just stand for the destruction of the environment or a loss of biodiversity, but also contains positive aspects such as urban gardening, urban animal habitats or energy-efficient housing, your motifs can focus on the complete range of phenomena.
The title My m² Earth is purely symbolic. Each image represents an individual and subjective perspective on global change and captures a share of the changing Earth as a whole. Your image can but does not have to correspond to the size of a real square meter. All uploaded images will be automatically cropped to a square meter format.
The only condition for participation is that you hold the copyright or, in case you are not the photographer yourself, that you have the photographer’s permission for uploading.
Who is invited to participate?
The project addresses all participants of the 2. German Future Earth Summit and other interested parties concerned about the Earth’s future. We encourage researchers and students across disciplines, e. g. from natural science, social science and humanities and engineering, as well as stakeholders from society, economics and politics to contribute with own images and/or texts.
