Brainstorming, mind mapping, and networking are concepts which seem to be innovative and democratic but above all new and fresh. Nonetheless they were invented at the beginning of the last century. The basic idea of indipendent but colaborative thinking is even older and was a main concern of the Enlightenment in Germany. Not only had its most famous academic representative, Immanuel Kant, postulated that every person should use his or her own reason. Several non-academic clubs and salons publicly discussed contemporary questions on challenging matters of public and academic interest.

In different sections, we did ask those questions of the 18th century again which are still relevant today, first of all: What is enlightenment for each and every one of us? I
n an interdisciplinary dialogue, we succeded to face the challenge of critically questioning the boundaries of the academic discourse (again).

We did not charge a participation fee, we provided travel grants for students, professional child care and free private accomodation, because our aim was to break through all kinds of obstacles and boundaries. We thank the funding line Freiräume (Exzellenzinitiative) and the studnet's parliament of the Humboldt-University for making this possible.
We are glad that as a result there were such lively discussions across all status groups. We would like to thank all participants for their contributions and especially the international guests and the interdisciplinary lecturers, who created a dialogue
beyond the borders of the disciplines and language barriers, just like we wished for!

Last but not least we would like to thank Prof. Dr. Tobias Rosefeldt for his encouragement, Roland Krause and Lisa Vogt for their kind support, the musicians, Gero Wiechmann and Oliver Gascoigne, for the musical interlude, and our sponsors for supporting us with about 12.000 Euro.
