Abstract Models of breeding bird richness and abundance in relation to landscape structure were built for a region of arable farmland in southern Portugal. Bird data were collected along 49 line transects and related to landscape structure within 50 and 250m buffers. There was a gradient of landscape structure ranging from fine-grained mosaics with small patches and high crop diversity, to coarse-grained mosaics with larger patches. Landscape configuration was not related to composition. Landscape diversity was the most important variable contributing to total bird richness and abundance. The occurrence of “montado” woodlands and scattered trees were associated with the presence of tree nesting birds.
