SUMMARY:Life lived. A portrait of a thinker of freedom: Simone Weil - Martina Bengert and Wolfgang Eilenberger in conversation
DESCRIPTION:A series of talks on thinking about freedom: Simone Weil \nThe event in the series “ Lived Life. A portrait of freedom thinkers” is dedicated to the French philosopher and mystic Simone Weil (1909 – 1943). Coming from an upper middle-class Jewish family\, she was already considered a rebel in her early youth. Against the backdrop of a radicalization of political systems in Europe\, Simone Weil asks about the causes of the spreading unease: Why do we live in an unjust society in which the individual cannot be free and content? Martina Bengert\, Professor of Romance Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin and mysticism researcher\, and Wolfram Eilenberger\, writer and philosopher (“Fire of Freedom”)\, introduce Simone Weil in conversation. Frankfurt publicist Rainer Hank (F.A.Z.) curates and moderates the series. “ Lived Life” is a guest event of the Karl Hermann Flach Foundation and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. \nFor more information click on this link. \nFor participation click on this link.

SUMMARY:Conference "the Simone Weil for our Times" organised by the UK Simone Weil Research Network
DESCRIPTION:The life and work of Simone Weil – philosopher\, mystic\, activist\, and enigma – has defied easy description and categorization. Although Albert Camus categorised her as ‘the only great spirit of our times’\, in recent years attention has been given to her metaphysics\, her political philosophy\, and the radicality and subversiveness of her ideas. Beyond that\, the range and depth of her interests and analysis has proved salient and of continued interest in relation to social and political problems. \nAs per André Gide’s identification of Weil as the ‘patron saint of all outsiders’\, Weil stood\, and still stands in contrast to the predominant trends in philosophy\, political theory\, and theology. Her thought provides a productive\, innovative\, and interdisciplinary lens from which to approach and address the 21st century’s most pressing problems as they relate to the three key disciplines of politics\, philosophy\, and theology. This conference aims to explore Weil’s work in relation to these concerns. \nFor more information please click on this link.

SUMMARY:80th Anniversary of The Death of Simone Weil (1909-1943)
DESCRIPTION:August 24\, 2023 is the 80th anniversary of the death of Simone Weil in the sanatorium at Grosvenor Hall in Ashford\, Kent\, UK. \nParis-based artist Thomas Hirschhorn built a stone memorial in the mountains above Davos in Switzerland: \nhttps://www2.hu-berlin.de/simoneweil-denkkollektiv/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/WhatsApp-Video-2023-08-24-at-15.30.32.mp4\n  \nIn a tribute to the 80th anniversary of Weil’s death\, Thomas Sojer from the Denkkollektiv drew attention to the often neglected but vital role of the being a teacher in Weil’s life and thinking. The essay appeared in German as part of the feuilleton magazine “feinschwarz” and can be read here.

SUMMARY:metaxy[l]ophon n°2
DESCRIPTION:What do you think\, Simone? – An encounter with Simone de Beauvoir and Simone Weil \nmetaxy[l]ophon: about the event series \nWe are always searching for new ways of thinking and working together in order to find inspiring and innovative ways of working in collectives\, communities and networks that supplement ‘regular’ academic events such as workshops\, conferences and seminars. This continuous search has yielded our new online event series\, the “metaxy[l]ophon.” \nThe ancient Greek word ‘metaxy’ means ‘in-between’ and is one of the most significant notions in Simone Weil’s thinking. The ‘metaxy’ refers to relations\, or more precisely\, to relationality. It links and separates at the same time. The “xylophone” (German ‘Xylophon’ without ‘e’ at the end) helps us to listen attentively: to words but also to spaces between the words\, to rhythm and sound. \nWe envision the “metaxy[l]ophon” as an open series of table-talk-like dialogues lasting roughly one hour. These dialogues will briefly interrupt and simultaneously enrich everyday life: Two researchers\, theorists or artists sit at a virtual table in order to think and talk.

SUMMARY:Der abwesende Gott. Simone Weil und Susan Taubes │Öffentlicher Abend im Rahmen des 16. Berliner Kolloquium Junge Religionsphilosophie
DESCRIPTION:Die Veranstaltung findet an der Katholischen Akademie in Berlin statt.

SUMMARY:International Simone Weil Seminar in Uppsala\, Sweden
DESCRIPTION:From 25th–27th November 2022 Christine Zyka and Emmanuel Gabellieri will give an international bilingual seminar on Simone Weil at the Newman Institute in Uppsala\, Sweden. Over the last years\, Emmanuel Gabellieri’s ‘Simone Weil Seminars’ have become an important meeting and melting point of current international Simone Weil scholarship. Now the seminar comes to Sweden for the first time. \nThe denkkollektiv will participate in this event with a contribution on the letters written by Simone and André Weil while André was in prison in 1940. Intrigued by Weil‘s concept of metaxy\, Martina\, Max\, and Tom will approach the letters from three individual yet symbiotic angles: “Metaxy I: Darkness\, Emptiness\, Kenosis. Simone Weil and Zen“ (Martina)\, “Metaxy II: When corpora turn diaphanous. Bible\, Simone Weil and the Jewish people“ (Tom)\, „Metaxy III: Bodies in prison. Translation and translocation: a bodily (somatic) reading“ (Max).

SUMMARY:Criatura\, creador\, decreación. Simone Weil | Giorgio Agamben
DESCRIPTION:“Criatura\, creador\, decreación. Simone Weil | Giorgio Agamben” will be the topic of Martina’s talk at the international conference “Giorgio Agamben. The Urgency of Thought / Giorgio Agamben: la urgencia del pensamiento“. From 19 to 21 October scholars\, philosophers\, and artists from different fields try to find approaches to Agamben’s oeuvre. One of the many questions Martina wants to ask Agamben concerns his unpublished dissertation on Simone Weil and his use of Weil’s notion of ‘décréation’.

SUMMARY:Retreat: Lines\, lines\, dot\, line. K N O T.
DESCRIPTION:We need knots. The denkkollektiv\, c’est vivre la cordée: Manifold lines of flight\, people\, friends\, yet unknown projects docking and un-docking\, ever-changing constellations\, and cooperation. From time to time – at least once a year – we hold our breaths to let the past\, present\, and future merge. This year we will come together in the Dominican monastery in Leipzig: Sunday\, 2 to Tuesday\, 4 October. By sorting out knots\, new knots will emerge. Time for a retreat.

SUMMARY:The denʞkollektiv introduces itself in the context of Esther Ramharter's seminar "Lektüreproseminar: Texte von Simone Weil"
DESCRIPTION:Esther Ramharter\, member of the HUVAC-project\, will give the denʞkollektiv the opportunity to introduce itself to new students of Simone Weil’s work in the context of her Simone Weil reading seminar at the University of Vienna. The seminar takes place during Winter Term 2021/22 and focuses on giving students a broad understanding of Weil while also training students’ basic philosophical skills. \nThe denʞkollektiv will give the course insight into some of the most topical questions in Simone Weil scholarship while also contextualising Weil’s work within current reception trends.

SUMMARY:Écriture sabotée
DESCRIPTION:In November 2021\, the Istanbul art magazine Art  Unlimited published the Turkish version of the writing experiment “Écriture  sabotée/sabotage créateur. Reading Simone Weil\, Strolling Through  Textual Ruins” by Tom Sojer\, Max Walther and Martina Bengert. We experimented with Simone Weil’s notion of ‘not reading’ in collaboration with artist Thomas Hirschhorn\, approaching the concept via multiple overlapping readings\, comments and responses. The project was curated within the framework of Shulamit Bruckstein’s dossier “Wednesday  Society”. We would also like to thank the Simone Weil Foundation for their generous  financial support in translating the text into Turkish.

SUMMARY:Drei Sätze #6: Martina Bengert\, Thomas Sojer\, Max Walther
DESCRIPTION:Max Walther\, Tom Sojer and Martina Bengert wrote a collaborative text in the section “ Drei Sätze” (“Three Sentences”) of “Literaturwissenschaft Berlin”\, which informs literary scholars and enthusiasts about the latest debates\, events and research in the Berlin literary scene. Their text explains/performs in its own way what thinking in a collective means (to the denkkollektiv).

SUMMARY:metaxy[l]ophon n°1
DESCRIPTION:“What becomes of agency in a more-than-human world?” \n  \nmetaxy[l]ophon: Our new event series \nWe are always searching for new ways of thinking and working together in order to find inspiring and innovative ways of working in collectives\, communities and networks that supplement ‘regular’ academic events such as workshops\, conferences and seminars.

SUMMARY:Steirischer Herbst ’21: Simone Weil… [nicht zu akademisch]
DESCRIPTION:On 3 October 2021\, Max Walther\, Tom Sojer and Martina Bengert from the Simone Weil denkkollektiv held an open performance lecture as part of the Austrian art festival “Steirischer Herbst”. The performance took place in the immediate vicinity of Thomas Hirschhorn’s “Simone Weil Memorial” on Esperantoplatz in Graz. The performance was entitled “Simone Weil […] not too academic” and comprised a trialogue about Weil’s thinking\, actions and work. We were particularly pleased about the subsequent discussion with the audience and passers-by\, among which there were people who perhaps came into contact with Simone Weil for the first time that day.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Attention. Öffnungen durchqueren nach Simone Weil (HUVAC-Project 2021 "Simone Weil Revisited")
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n\n\nThe international and interdisciplinary workshop “Attention. Öffnungen durchqueren nach Simone Weil” took place at the University of Vienna from 27 to 30 September 21. In this German-language\, in-person workshop\, students and established scholars of both the University of Vienna and the HU Berlin gathered to discuss and explore Weil’s writings at an eye-to-eye level. All inputs and discussions centred around the concept of attention\, which is at the core of Weil’s philosophy.\n\n \n\nThe event was organised by the members of the HUVAC-project\, with special support from Max Walther and Tom Sojer (Simone Weil denkkollektiv) as well as Camila Navas López. On 29/9/21 the workshop participants discussed various resonances between the writings of Simone Weil and Susan Taubes with Prof. Dr. Thomas Macho from IFK Vienna and Dr. Christina Pareigis (Hamburg). On 30/9/21 the workshop concluded with a deliberately experimental “Denkatelier\,” in which we looked for creative ways to bring together the central ideas developed in the course of the workshop. This process was filmed by the artist Matthias Mollner\, who in turn translated the central theme of ‘attention’ into an auditory-visual recording. You can watch the film here.

SUMMARY:Joint Seminar Sessions in Winter Term 2020/21 (HUVAC-Project 2021 “Simone Weil Revisited”)
DESCRIPTION:In Winter Term 2020/2021\, three digital seminars revolving around Simone Weil took place (Martina Bengert’s B.A. seminar\, Department of Romance Studies\, HU Berlin: “Fractures\, Splinters\, Lists. Reading Simone Weil”; Sandra Lehmann’s M.A. seminar\, Department of Intercultural Philosophy of Religion\, University of Vienna: “Simone Weil. Mysticism and Politics”; Esther Ramharter’s M.A. seminar\, Department of Philosophy\, University of Vienna: “Philosophy of Religion”). In the spirit of productive heterogeneity\, these three courses brought together students who were at different stages in their studies (BA/MA/PhD) as well as students from different fields of study\, including Romance Studies\, Literary Studies\, Philosophy\, as well as Catholic and Protestant Theology and Education. Both teachers and students found the joint sessions extremely enriching and stimulating as these sessions created an awareness of various interdisciplinary approaches to Weil’s texts.
