As a cosmopolitan city, Berlin has a long tradition of scientific buildings that have shaped the cityscape over the last three centuries and have given it a face of its own. The first buildings were not universities, but buildings for the Charité and the Academy of Sciences. Only later university buildings did determine the appearance of the city. Despite this strong representation, they were also subject to the constant change of Berlin's growing European metropolis. Urban planning ideas and political front positions within the city left their mark and are still visible today.
Berlin has a valuable architectural heritage, which is not only preserved, but also constantly expanded and thus contributes to the common European heritage.
+++ A digital version of the exhibition is currently being prepared. It will be available for viewing from mid-April 2020 at architekturen-der-wissenschaft.de. +++
The exhibition "Architectures of Science. The Universities of Berlin from a European Perspective" contextualises the urban planning ensembles of Berlin's universities in terms of the history of science, their architects, building concepts, urban planning contexts and political framework conditions. The correlation of urban development and university buildings was visualized in an animation with historical maps from different times.
A magazine has been published to document the exhibition.

The open lecture series will bring together architects, urban planners, (scientific and artistic) historians, sociologists and philosophers in a discussion on architecture and science. With a view to current and historical solutions for building for science, perspectives for the future will also be developed and discussed:
Does science (still) need a special housing? How do the demands of science with regard to representativeness and functionality relate to each other?
Do the natural sciences, life sciences or the humanities formulate different demands on their buildings - and how can architects even meet these demands?
How does the university define itself architecturally? Will the digital revolution change the research locations and knowledge stores of the future?
How do the university and science position themselves architecturally in the metropolis and what urban-communicative offers do they make to society?

In the recently published guide "Architectures of Science" the project "Science in the City" finds its closure. The architectural guide for the science city of Berlin takes a critical and detailed look at how science, architecture and the city have been interwoven over the last two centuries and still are. In this way it shines a light on political as well as social times and enables a new understanding of Berlin's university landscape.
