Building Teacher Capacity

Building Teacher Capacity for Critical AI Engagement

The AI2PI Teacher Academy enables teachers to critically and ethically engage with artificial intelligence—one of education's most pressing challenges. As generative AI reshapes learning at unprecedented speed, educators need guidance to pedagogically assess and integrate these technologies.

We envision schools where educators become reflective practitioners, making informed, pedagogically sound decisions about AI in complex learning contexts.

Through design-based research and international collaboration, we develop adaptable training modules and build European communities of practice. By supporting teachers as essential mediators, we aim to shift the profession from reactive to proactive engagement with AI.

PROJECT GOALS

The AI2PI Teacher Academy seeks to empower educators with the skills to critically engage with AI technologies by integrating AI reflection into pedagogical practices. Our goals are to:

  1. Develop frameworks for educators to evaluate AI tools' quality and impact on teaching and learning
  2. Promote reflective thinking and informed decision-making in the use of AI technologies in the classroom
  3. Provide ongoing professional development to help teachers adapt to AI's evolving role in education
  4. Ensure AI tools are used ethically, equitably, and effectively to improve teaching and learning for all students

Our approach

AI2PI follows a design-based research methodology across three phases.

AI2PI work package structure

The project unfolds across three interconnected phases:

Phase I — Exploration (Year 1)
Context analysis across seven countries, mapping existing AI literacy frameworks and learning laboratory practices.

Phase II — Development (Year 2)
Co-creation of competence-based training modules, establishment of communities of practice, and development of the AI2PI learning infrastructure.

Phase III — Implementation (Year 3)
Large-scale piloting with over 1,000 teachers, development of open educational resources, and formulation of policy recommendations.

These phases are supported by continuous project management (WP1), quality assurance and evaluation (WP6), and dissemination and impact activities (WP7).

Expected impact

Key outcomes include:

  • Increased teacher confidence in critically assessing AI technologies
  • Sustainable international communities of pedagogical innovation
  • Open Educational Resources accessible beyond the project lifetime
  • Enhanced attractiveness and resilience of the teaching profession in the digital age
