Many theories in fundamental physics, such as general relativity or the Standard Model of elementary particles, are gauge theories. While their symmetries are what dictate physical dynamics and interactions, they lead to redundancies, which can make it difficult to discern which quantities have physical meaning. It is thus desirable to reformulate a gauge theory in terms of gauge invariant quantities, with which physical quantities can be computed. Our research shows that, in general, the reformulation of gauge theories in gauge invariant fields can be interpreted in the mathematical framework of L-infinity algebras. In this talk, I will introduce L-infinity algebras and the mechanism of homotopy transfer, and show how to formulate gauge invariant perturbation theory to all orders in perturbations.
