I will talk about the non-perturbative renormalization of the energy-momentum tensor in the two-dimensional O(3) nonlinear sigma model, an important toy model for asymptotically free theories. Using a lattice regularization with shifted boundary conditions, I showcase a strategy to compute the renormalization constants required to recover the correct energy-momentum tensor in the continuum limit. Numerical simulations, employing cluster algorithms and improved actions to control lattice artifacts yield promising results for a part of the energy-momentum tensor. However, significant challenges remain in achieving a complete renormalization due to large discretization effects.
