Solitons are classical solutions to many field equations retrievable in various branches of physics, ranging from condensed matter physics to gravity and supergravity, from gauge theories to the M-theory. In this seminar I will introduce the very interesting yet often neglected notion of solitonic solution, focussing on the kink solutions in dimensions D = 1+1 and on the ’t Hooft-Polyakov monopole in D = 3+1. The concept of BPS bound will also be discussed in some detail. The style of my talk will be as less mathematical as possible, hoping to leave enough space to the physical intuition.
