Among modellers, there is awareness that model results can only be interpreted in view of the assumptions that inform model construction and analysis, but less systematic questioning of those assumptions. Moreover, current methodological discussions tend to focus on integrating social and ecological dynamics or diverse knowledges and data within a model. Yet choices regarding types of modelling, model structure, data handling, interpretation of results and model validation are not purely epistemic. They are entangled with values, contexts of production and use, power relations, and pragmatic considerations. Situated Modelling extends a relational understanding of the world to scientific knowledge production and with that to modelling itself in order to enable a systematic interrogation of these choices and to research social-ecological transformations relationally. To make tangible the situatedness of simulation modelling, we build on existing practices and describe the situatedness of three distinct modelling approaches. We then suggest four guiding principles for Situated Modelling: 1. attending to the apparatus of knowledge production that is socially and materially embedded and produced by e.g. research infrastructures, power relations, and ways of thinking; 2. considering how agency is distributed between model, world, data, modeller in model construction; 3. creating heterogenous collectives which together occupy the formerly individualised subject position; and 4. using agonism as an epistemic virtue to retain and work with significant differentiations of social-ecological dynamics throughout the modelling process.},

It also demonstrates the strength of praxeography to expose how multiple welfare categorization processes shape experiences and events of dis/ability in practice, potentially contradicting the stated intentions of social policy.
Conclusion
The results suggest that the attachment of categories to people in public welfare needs to be changed to make public administration more flexible to responding to the situated processes that bring about differentiations of equal and unequal in practice. abstract = {In this paper, we introduce the rice production systems in Burkina Faso and Uruguay and analyze them as two divergent instantiations of global-local entanglements. We trace how global-local entanglements come into being and how seemingly similar practices of entangling result in contrasting configurations. Our empirical material shows how local understandings and concerns, as well as practices of enacting them, are constantly ordered to produce a fit between globalized and situated relations. In the case of the Uruguayan rice sector, these efforts constitute a harmonized, depoliticized web of relations, which prompt for particular kinds of doings and reflections to become unquestioned and preclude others. In Burkina Faso, in turn, comparable efforts and tools do not result in a hegemonic frame of reference but rather amplify divergences and contradictions between different understandings and activities revolving around rice production. Studying these two different orderings of fits between global forms and situated relations sheds light on de-/stabilizations of food systems and the ongoing work they require. Such a processual and comparative perspective allows for a multiplication of stories on global-local entangling. Thus, it goes beyond reproducing clear-cut categorizations and escapes dichotomies, such as the one of market integration and market failure.},

In line with current anthropological research in the region, we aim to illustrate how clear divisions of time in BiH between post-socialism, post-war and an undetermined Europeanization process do not adequately address the nuances of multiple temporalities the interlocutors referen-ce. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in state institutions, we attempt to unders-tand what living in the post entails for civil servants in BiH’s energy and environment sector. Specifically, we look at how temporal markers relate to the Dayton Meantime (Jansen 2015), especially in the context of Europeanization and Yugostalgia. Discussing the analytic produc-tivity of postsocialism, working out certain (dis-)continuities, we focus on how civil servants employ references of Europeanization and Yugostalgia as temporal markers through which they make sense of their past, present and future.},

So verschwimmt die Trennung zwischen beobachteten und beobachtenden Subjekten ebenso wie die zwischen Beobachten, Intervenieren und Analysieren. Darüber hinaus argumentiere ich, dass die aktive Teilnahme an einer Intervention als ethnografische Langzeitintervention dienen kann, die auf die Produktion neuartiger Forschungsfragen und methodischer Erkenntnisse abzielt, die weitere Forschungszusammenhänge informieren können. Faced with mounting resistance against mining, neoliberal governance resorts to polarising strategies that delegitimise the heterogenous positions people hold regarding mining. In this paper, we contrast and complicate these dichotomies with the lived experiences on the ground in Kyrgyzstan. We focus on the ‘Taldy-Bulak Levoberezhny’ gold mine near the town of Orlovka that has been lauded by the state and business community as a paragon of company-community ‘cooperation’. We question how the gold mine has come to be an exemplary case of cooperation in a conflict-rife sector. Based on behavioural experiments, surveys, and in-depth inquiry, we follow and unpack entanglements of valuations, discourses and practices that have repackaged Orlovka from a former Soviet mining town in depression into a putative model of progress. Our interdisciplinary account unravels the contradictory processes of re/making extractive frontiers and managing resistance to extractivist expansion that interweave neoliberal practices with nationalist discourses. Beneath the discourses praising Orlovka, we find a community that has never stopped resisting despite consenting to the gold mine. The extractive entanglements we unearth exemplify the diversity of exigencies and aspirations behind resisting, negotiating and/or allowing mining while attesting to the diversified portfolio of tactics that silence and delegitimise these life concerns.},

Starting from the observation that the future serves as an explanation and legitimization for the doings and sayings of different groups of actors involved in the Bagré Growth Pole Project in Burkina Faso, this paper offers an analysis of two instantiations of future-making. Based on 9 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Burkina Faso, I examine how the future is addressed and made by ordering and materializing temporal relations. In the first part, I focus on how the past–present–future triad is constantly cut, the past blanked and the future prioritized. I argue that this imperative of the future serves to silence contestations and conflicts from which possibly alternative futures could be derived. In the second part, I turn to the material dimension of future-making through infrastructure construction and maintenance. Infrastructuring in Bagré permanently alters landscapes and creates “as-if” spaces, thereby producing path dependencies that will channel future possibilities of living in the area. Shedding light on how specific futures are (un)made in practice provides a lens which may inform discussions about alternative and eventually more just futures.},

abstract = {Die Zusammenarbeit mit Akteur*innen im Feld ist spätestens seit den 1980er Jahren ein zentrales Thema ethnografischer Wissensproduktion. Allerdings ist in der Umsetzung von Kollaborationen meist folgender Zwiespalt zu beobachten: Varianten der Dekonstruktion und „Kritik von außen“ stehen Formen der engagierten oder aktivistischen Forschung gegenüber, die „von innen“ an vorab definierten Problemlösungen arbeiten oder epistemische Positionen des Forschungsfeldes übernehmen. Beide Pole können aus unserer Sicht die Frage nach gesellschaftlich wirkmächtiger Kritik aus den Sozialwissenschaften heute nicht ausreichend beantworten.
Basierend auf zehn Jahren Zusammenarbeit mit Partner*innen im Feld der psychiatrischen Versorgung und Forschung, stellen wir in diesem Artikel drei unterschiedliche Formate des ko-laborativen – temporären und nicht an einem gemeinsamem, normativem Ziel orientierten – Zusammenarbeitens vor dem Hintergrund ihrer praktischen Durchführung detailliert vor. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Akteur*innen im Feld ist spätestens seit den 1980er Jahren ein zentrales Thema ethnografischer Wissensproduktion. Allerdings ist in der Umsetzung von Kollaborationen meist folgender Zwiespalt zu beobachten: Varianten der Dekonstruktion und „Kritik von außen“ stehen Formen der engagierten oder aktivistischen Forschung gegenüber, die „von innen“ an vorab definierten Problemlösungen arbeiten oder epistemische Positionen des Forschungsfeldes übernehmen. Beide Pole können aus unserer Sicht die Frage nach gesellschaftlich wirkmächtiger Kritik aus den Sozialwissenschaften heute nicht ausreichend beantworten.
Basierend auf zehn Jahren Zusammenarbeit mit Partner*innen im Feld der psychiatrischen Versorgung und Forschung, stellen wir in diesem Artikel drei unterschiedliche Formate des ko-laborativen – temporären und nicht an einem gemeinsamem, normativem Ziel orientierten – Zusammenarbeitens vor dem Hintergrund ihrer praktischen Durchführung detailliert vor. In general, participants reported to be less concerned about their own risk than about the risk faced by others. However, a good portion of those who thought that they themselves were low risk actually wrote about their belief that they nevertheless had a responsibility to behave in ways that benefited others, even if it came at a cost to themselves. In loose reference to Immanuel Kant’s notion that humans have a rational duty to act in a socially responsible manner, we interpret people’s comments about other-regarding behaviour as an initiation of a Kantian tendency during the Corona pandemic. Based on these findings, we suggest that policy makers may do better in times of crisis than nudging, incentivizing, or compelling the public by law. They can perhaps accomplish more by (also) nurturing people’s innate sense of the need for socially responsible action to be taken in order to meet the daunting challenges of present and future crises.},

Against this backdrop, managing natural resources needs to be fundamentally rethought as balancing human-nature entanglements continues to challenges policymakers and conservation managers obligated toward politically and scientifically feasible measures. A closer look at wild Atlantic salmon management in Europe reveals dynamic shifts over the past two centuries, particularly with regard to how hatcheries are used as conservation tools. We use case studies on Norwegian and Welsh wild salmon cultivation practices to trace these shifts in conservation and management practices. We frame our analysis through a lens of shifting conceptualizations of naturalness and human-salmon relationships. Starting at the multinational level and then moving to ground-level cases, we show how naturalness is conceptualized by managers and hatchery stakeholders, and how those perceptions play into definitions of desired outcomes for wild salmon conservation as well as the strategies and technologies implemented to achieve these conservation goals. We highlight two paradoxes that are illuminated by the disputes and shifting perceptions surrounding salmon hatcheries. First, we show that hatcheries are no longer perceived as appropriate tools to increase wild salmon populations. Rather, hatchery technologies are being withdrawn, limited, or transformed, often resulting in local-level controversy. Paradoxically, these changes are, in themselves highly technical processes involving genomic testing and big data inventories. Second, despite the recognition of ever more complex human-nature entanglements, the practical outcomes for salmon conservation are oriented toward standardized testability and manageability and limiting certain human-salmon interactions, and although some technologies are instrumental, others are disregarded. As a result, those techno-social communities organized around hatchery technologies are at risk of being removed or otherwise excluded from their preferred conservation activities.},

Rather than using the word precarity to describe the effect of cuts in welfare state benefits and investments, we grasp precarity ethnographically as a situated, processual condition that emerges in urban assemblages. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in community psychiatry and with people with a psychiatric diagnosis in Berlin, we elaborate on the entanglement of housing market development, gentrification processes and mental health care provision. Community psychiatry professionals especially face challenges securing decent housing for their clients in the inner-city; as a result they pressure them to keep disturbances to a minimum and keep inconspicuous clients in the mental health care system. We argue that precarity is contingently produced by the coming-together of urban developments and community psychiatry principles. As such, precarity itself is generative of shifts in mental health care practices, produces visible tensions within community psychiatry and unfolds in the everyday struggles of mental health care clients, resulting in ambiguous outcomes. To provide a relational analysis of precarity as lived experience and a condition of urban life, we introduce the notion of niching as a middle-range concept connecting conditions of precarity with what people make of it. This is complemented by an analysis of the socio-material practices that produce urbanism.},

It operationalizes several concepts such as bifurcation, degree of irreversibility and alignment. Theoretical discussions concern collectivity in scientific practice, epistemology of computer simulations, materiality in experiments, laboratory studies and ontology. Building and running models can be described as a process of iteratively and continuously aligning model formats through material-semiotic practices of simplification, experimentation and visualization. These practices are each related to some model formats more than to others. The notion of “format” captures the different ways in which “the model” appears in everyday practices: as equations and code, but also as visualizations, plots of model output, descriptive text in a paper and as mental models. In a productive misalignment, each format contributes something particular to the model. Finally, this work problematizes underlying epistemological and ontological assumptions about “the social”, “the natural” and “the hybrid” as separate spheres, which is necessary in order to come to terms with hybrid, socio-ecological processes as they become more and more pressing in the Anthropocene. Due to the low availability of reliable urbanization data, remote sensing techniques become increasingly popular for monitoring land use change processes in that region. This study aims to quantify land cover for the Ouagadougou metropolitan area between 2002 and 2013 using a Landsat-TM/ETM+/OLI time series. We use a support vector regression approach and synthetically mixed training data. Working with bi-seasonal image stacks, we account for spectral variability between dry and rainy season and incorporate a new class - seasonal vegetation - that describes surfaces that are soil and vegetation during parts of the year. We produce fraction images of urban surfaces, soil, permanent vegetation and seasonal vegetation for each time step. Statistical evaluation shows that a temporally generalized, bi-seasonal model over all time steps performs equally or better than yearly or mono-seasonal models and provides reliable cover fractions. Urban fractions can be used to visualize pixel-based spatial-temporal patterns of urban densification and expansion. A simple rule set based on a seasonal vegetation to soil ratio is appropriate to delineate areas of unplanned and planned settlements and, thus, contributes to monitoring urban development on a neighborhood scale.},

In the neurosciences, and departing from older perspectives, perception, cognition and knowledge are increasingly seen as integral elements of action, dynamically situating/embedding ‘cognitive agents’ in their socio-cultural-natural environments. Likewise, recent research in epigenetics suggests that bodily practices, shaped by their social and material environments within which they are performed, imprint a body that becomes highly susceptible to both past ‘experiences’ of and to present changes in its social and material environment. In this chapter, we critically review the research (practices) that prompted this challenge and discuss how it affects, but does not consider, social theories of interaction, habituation and inheritance. In a second step, we develop a social and practice theory on the basis of a co-laborative research agenda of ‘embodied practice’ that stresses the somatic context, performativity, historicity and dynamic situativity of embedded bodies. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and methodological implications of such an endeavour.},

Interdisciplinarity has become a desideratum within sciences and politics. At the same time, there is no consensus about how to structure or operationalize interdisciplinary activities. In this article a co-laborative interaction between ethnology and psychiatry will be described. While this has centrally to do with markets and prices, we deliberately open the concept to embrace more than economic perspectives. As such competition complements a broadening of analytical attention from the ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘when’ to include prominently the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of particular land use practices and the question to whom this matters and ought to matter. We suggest that competition is an analytically productive concept, because it does not commit the analyst to a particular epistemological stance. It addresses reflexivity and feed-back, emergence and downward causation, history and response rates—concepts that all carry very different conceptual and analytical connotations in different disciplines. We propose to make these differences productive by putting them alongside each other through the notion of competition. Last not least, the heuristic lens of competition affords the combination of empirical and normative aspects, thus addressing land use practices in material, social and ethical terms.},

Alcohol dependence is in both fields in different ways understood due to divergent requirements on the action and knowledge levels: in the clinical field symptoms were contextualized, professionals actively asked about the patients’ subjective experience and different explanatory models were flexibly used. In the research project the studied variables were isolated, the patient’s complaints objectified and the theoretical assumptions limited. The results show that the research-practice gap cannot be rectified in a trivial way. New attempts to better integrate the scientific and clinical-practical forms of knowledge or to let them coexist on equal terms should take place.},
