In the early 2010s, Stefan Beck proposed exploring ways of being-in-the-world from a practice-theoretically informed angle. Some lab members later came to term this “phenomenography” and our lab has been developing and discussing this approach for almost a decade now. After Stefan’s unexpected and much too early passing, some of us elaborated on how phenomenology and practice theory can be brought together in the study of phenomena as they are being enacted using examples from research fields such as neuroscience, psychiatry or reproductive medicine (Niewöhner et al. 2016). In this latest German-language publication, lab members Patrick Bieler, Milena Bister and Jörg Niewöhner now extensively discuss how they understand phenomenography to be routed both in the tradition of phenomenology and practice theories. Based on rich ethnographic work in (community) psychiatry, they share how “experience” can be analysed as a heterogenous phenomenon that is constantly assembled and re-assembled in practice:
