In this presentation, I discuss violence against animals in Mexico as part of a “violent machine.” I argue that by taking a serious look at violence against animals we can gain new insights into how violence in Mexico operates by analyzing how it is connected to other forms of violence and to changing ideas about justice.

Iván Sandoval-Cervantes is a cultural anthropologist, currently working as an Associated Professor at the department of Anthropology, University of Nevada (Las Vegas). His current project examines the emergent animal protection movement in urban Mexico in the midst of continuous violence and ongoing challenges to the Mexican legal system. This project seeks to understand how animals become political within specific contexts, and it is based on ethnographic fieldwork research in México (mainly in Ciudad Juárez) and on digital research. This research has been generously funded by UCLA Law, the Culture and Animals Foundation, and the Animal Law and Policy Program at Harvard Law School.
The session is moderated by Elisabeth Luggauer (IfEE, HU-Berlin).
