Tülin Fidan, a research associate at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven and member of the Lab, will be talking about:
Tracing dumped munitions in the North Sea
In this talk, I will follow the traces of dumped munitions in the North Sea. After WWII, it is estimated that around 1.6 million tons of munitions ended up in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, which were used as a place for human disposal. Eighty years later, the munitions are corroding, and toxic substances such as TNT are leaking out.
Drawing on my ethnographic research as part of the EU-Interreg research project REMARCO (Remediation, Management, Monitoring and Cooperation addressing North Sea UXO, UXO = unexploded ordnance), I reflect on the traces those munitions leave underwater and on the coast, in scientific endeavours, in political decision-making, in the armaments industry, and in questions of heritage and responsibilities.
