abstract = {In this paper, we introduce the rice production systems in Burkina Faso and Uruguay and analyze them as two divergent instantiations of global-local entanglements. We trace how global-local entanglements come into being and how seemingly similar practices of entangling result in contrasting configurations. Our empirical material shows how local understandings and concerns, as well as practices of enacting them, are constantly ordered to produce a fit between globalized and situated relations. In the case of the Uruguayan rice sector, these efforts constitute a harmonized, depoliticized web of relations, which prompt for particular kinds of doings and reflections to become unquestioned and preclude others. In Burkina Faso, in turn, comparable efforts and tools do not result in a hegemonic frame of reference but rather amplify divergences and contradictions between different understandings and activities revolving around rice production. Studying these two different orderings of fits between global forms and situated relations sheds light on de-/stabilizations of food systems and the ongoing work they require. Such a processual and comparative perspective allows for a multiplication of stories on global-local entangling. Thus, it goes beyond reproducing clear-cut categorizations and escapes dichotomies, such as the one of market integration and market failure.},

abstract = {Im Zuge methodologischer Diskussionen zur Zusammenarbeit zwischen Ethnograf*innen und Feld werden Unternehmen für gewöhnlich nicht als potentielle Partner und Ko-Diskutanten in Betracht gezogen. Ausgehend von einer Beleuchtung der sozialtheoretisch begründeten und forschungspraktisch verstärkten Gründe für diese Skepsis, fokussiert dieser Beitrag die Bedingungen für solche Kollaborationsbeziehungen. Dazu werden im ersten Schritt drei etablierte Formen ethnografischer Forschung erörtert, die sich inmitten privatwirtschaftlicher Kontexte entfaltet: eingebettete Ethnografie im Auftrag der Unternehmen selbst, akademisch situierte Organisationsethnografie sowie ethnografisch-anthropologische Untersuchungen von Phänomenen, die das zeitgenössische Zusammenleben und Wirtschaften ordnen. Die darin sichtbar werdenden methodologischen Besonderheiten und Herausforderungen werden anschließend am konkreten Beispiel einer multi-stationären ethnografischen Studie in der Lebensmittelbranche diskutiert. Daraus abgeleitete Überlegungen und Vorschläge komplettieren ein Plädoyer für dezidierte ethnografisch-anthropologische Aufmerksamkeit gegenüber privatwirtschaftlichen Akteuren als ethnografischen Gegenübern und möglichen Forschungspartnern.},

abstract = {Alcohol dependence constitutes a big challenge for the psychiatric care system. At the same time a considerable research-practice gap is known to exist in the field of addiction disorders. A contrastive participant observation took place in a day-care hospital specialized in addictive disorders and by a neuroscientific research project. The observations were interpreted according to the practice theoretical concept of actualization. Alcohol dependence is in both fields in different ways understood due to divergent requirements on the action and knowledge levels: in the clinical field symptoms were contextualized, professionals actively asked about the patients’ subjective experience and different explanatory models were flexibly used. In the research project the studied variables were isolated, the patient’s complaints objectified and the theoretical assumptions limited. The results show that the research-practice gap cannot be rectified in a trivial way. New attempts to better integrate the scientific and clinical-practical forms of knowledge or to let them coexist on equal terms should take place.},
