abstract = {This article explores human-thing-relations and what it means to turn something into »waste« through an ethnography of Self-Storage facilities. Self-Storage entrepreneurs rent out storage rooms for private use in huge buildings. These »Houses for things« might be the logical continuation of consumer society and are related to all other »Thing-spaces« (»Res-Topias«). Self-Storage houses turn out to be an extremely rewarding space for researching material culture, because the things that have arrived in Self-Storage spaces have undergone an intensive process: Self-Storage is based on negotiations, with one’s own self and with others, it demands a reflexive handling of things and their use. The practice of Self-Storage generates a »Self of Self-Storage«, which answered itself questions regarding its past, present, and future. A literary technique from the 18th century –the so called »Zimmerreise« (»Room travel«) – is applied here for the first time as an ethnographic method to »make things talk«.},

abstract = {This paper reports on a co-laborative laboratory ethnography in a molecular biology laboratory conducting research on environmental epigenetics. It focuses on a single study concerned with the material implications of social differentiation. The analysis briefly raises biopolitical concerns. Its main concern lies with an understanding of the human body as local in its working infrastructure or "inner laboratory", an understanding that emerges from the co-laborative inquiry between biologists and anthropologist. This co-laborative mode of inquiry raises productive tensions within biology as to the universal or local nature of human nature and within anthropology as to the status of human biology within social theory. The paper cannot resolve this tension. Rather it explores it as an epistemic object in the context of interdisciplinarity, ontography and co-laboration. In concluding, it specifies co-laboration as temporary, non-teleological joint epistemic work aimed at producing new kinds of reflexivity.},

Infrastructures mediate human interaction and shape social organization. Anthropology has developed a relational perspective on infrastructures analyzing them as the ongoing interweaving of embodied social and political choices, moral orders, and technical networks. This approach has much to offer for anthropologists, because it is largely based on ethnographic research, shows a deep commitment to materiality as practice and provides a productive way of thinking through the changing relations of center and periphery. It is an area of research with important intersections into the information sciences and urban studies.},

abstract = {In my Master thesis I discuss the case of Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, West Africa to account for rapid urban expansion which is an important issue for many sub-Saharan cities. I ask (1) for the processes that underlie and accompany the growth of the city and (2) how they relate to the lives of the urban dwellers in the so-called «non-lotis» of Ouagadougou. During a three months field work from September to November 2014, I conducted 86 semi-structured interviews, informal conversations and participant observation. In the first part of my thesis I argue that the changing urban landscape can be examined and understood through the notion of infrastructuring; changing legal frameworks and planning schemes within a global marketisation of land and property are interwoven and co-constitute what is referred to as «lotissement» by the Burkinabé. In the second part of my thesis I focus more closely on how people deal with and navigate within the emerging and changing urban landscapes in their daily lives. Drawing together my ethnographic material with the anthropological literature on hope, I analyse daily practices of narrating, dwelling and waiting as effective engagements with uncertain futures. I argue that the hopes of the (peri-)urban dwellers are grounded in the urban landscape which is simultaneously shaped by these hopes. Hope in my account becomes a fruitful analytical tool to understand (a) way(s) of being in the world, connecting past, present and future and thus, keeping analyses open instead of ignoring or foreclosing possible futures. The latter potentially connects my own work to fields and discussions on lives in and under uncertain conditions beyond the regional context of and sub-Saharan Africa and the topic of rapid urban growth.},

How do affected families, clinics, and regulators deal with information about gamete donors and the donation itself? And how does this knowledge management contribute to the creation and enactment of kinship? Addressing these questions in Germany and Britain, this ethnography makes a comparative contribution to the empirical and theoretical analysis of kin-formation and social change. Maren Klotz reveals a contemporary renegotiation of the values of privacy, information-sharing, and connectedness as they relate to the social, clinical, and regulatory management of kinship information. Transparency, not genetics, is the moral imperative, and instead of an unambiguously discernible "geneticization," her findings on donor non-anonymity and parental openness display a pattern of "transparentization." This pattern represents a shift in authority over kinship away from the sometimes highhanded reproductive medical profession towards concerned groups, parents-by-donation, and policymakers.},

abstract = {In this essay, I describe life- and climate-scientifically informed Bio- and Geo-Politics as important drivers of incremental change in urban everyday life. In three steps, I develop a social anthropological research programmatic that allows analysis of such change. Firstly, I identify a new role for knowledge practices in the enactment of techniques of government in times of real experiments. Secondly, I demonstrate that German European Ethnology as well as anthropology internationally harbors a neglected tradition of systematic long-term, methodologically broad research that is worth re-considering. It is really the only way to analytically capture incremental socio-ecological change. In a third and last step, I sketch a research programmatic rooted within a relational understanding of urban everyday life that pleads for an ethnography of infrastructure and of administrative practice. I emphasize the necessary role of epistemic partnerships with other actors in science as well as in urban development. This form of co-laborative anthropology furthers a new understanding of reflexivity and critique as mobility.},

Methods: An ethnographic participant observation was conducted over a five-month period of time in two “Trialogue” self-help groups organized by the “Netzwerk Stimmenhören”, an NGO based in Berlin, Germany. Additionally, feedback interviews were held within the groups.
Results: Four different collective modes of ordering of voice-hearing are captured: Within the groups the phenomenon was at times (1) normalized in the mode of normalization, structured in the mode of voice-hearing (2) as a passion, (3) as a turn of fate or (4) as a disability.
Conclusions: Psychiatric-social anthropological cooperative research projects may help to achieve and support a change of perspectives for actors working in the psychiatry, actors in psychiatric self-help organizations and individuals who hear voices. Due to the applied methods results may not only be of interest within field of scientific discourse and furthermore create a different insight into the field.},

abstract = {Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression caused by mechanisms other than changes in the DNA itself. The field is rapidly growing and being widely promoted, attracting attention in diverse arenas. These include those of the social sciences, where some researchers have been encouraged by the resonance between imaginaries of development within epigenetics and social theory. Yet, sustained attention from science and technology studies (STS) scholars to epigenetics and the praxis it propels has been lacking. In this article, we reflexively consider some of the ways in which epigenetics is being constructed as an area of biomedical novelty and discuss the content and logics underlying the ambivalent promises being made by scientists working in this area. We then reflect on the scope, limits and future of engagements between epigenetics and the social sciences. Our discussion is situated within wider literatures on biomedicine and society, the politics of "interventionist STS", and on the problems of "caseness" within empirical social science.},

abstract = {Reproductive technologies involving donated eggs or sperm continue to elicit questions regarding family identity and the accessibility of genetic information in Europe. Both policy-makers and affected parents are faced with decisions about how to manage donor-data. Using ethnographic findings and policy analysis, this article compares modes of regulation in Germany and Britain, which variously authorise actors to manage kinship information and family formation. I consider the role of interest groups for affected parents and analyse how they contribute to a moral framing of the decision – if, when and how to tell a child about the donor. This ‘moralisation’, reflecting wider contemporary endorsement of information sharing within family life, tends to encourage early disclosure practices among so-called families-by-donation. German parents expressed greater anxiety about disclosure than British parents, which I attribute to greater regulatory uncertainty and to tensions between clinical pressures of secrecy and the moral pressure for information sharing.},

abstract = {Background: The management of obesity with its associated morbidity and mortality is a growing problem in primary care practices. Despite numerous recommendations in response to this challenge, weight management interventions still yield poor results. This is partly due to a discrepancy between physicians’ and patients’ understanding of the problem and possible solutions.; Objective: This study analyses patients’ and physicians’ visions for the future management of obesity.; Methods: Qualitative in-depth semi-structured interviews were performed. Physicians and patients were asked about their individual needs, experience and views regarding the management of obesity. Fifteen GPs and 15 overweight patients participated in this study. Interviews were transcribed and submitted to qualitative content analysis.; Results: The investigation reveals a high level of agreement between the two groups with regard to communication requirements for successful care. Both groups stressed the need for multi-modal care concepts inside and outside of GP practices. Both also addressed the current overburdening of outpatient care structures in dealing with the management of obesity.; Conclusion: Options should be developed for closer cooperation between GPs and support facilities inside and outside practices.},

abstract = {Cardiovascular diseases present the leading cause of death worldwide. Over the last decade, their preventio has become not only a central medical and public health issue but also a matter of political concern as well as a major market for pharma, nutrition, and exercise. A preventive assemblage has formed that integrates diverse kinds of knowledges, technologies, and actors, from molecular biology to social work, to foster a specific healthy lifestyle. In this article, the authors analyze this preventive assemblage as a heterogeneous engineer, that is, as an attempt to order complex everyday life into an architecture of modernism. This article draws on research conducted as part of the interdisciplinary research cluster ``preventive self'' (2006-2009) bringing together analyses from social anthropology, history, linguistics, sociology of knowledge, and medicine. The authors report here primarily from ethnographic investigations into biomedical research, primary care, and educational practices in kindergartens. The authors conclude that the preventive assemblage largely fails to install any kind of singular order. Instead, it is translated into existing orderings producing heterogeneity of a different nuance.},

abstract = {The molecular biological field of epigenetics has recently attracted attention not only in biology, but also in the broader scientific community and the popular press. Commentators paint a very heterogeneous picture with some arguing that epigenetics is nothing but another aspect of gene regulation, and others enthusiastically proclaiming a paradigmatic shift in developmental biology. This article analyses a particular approach to environmental epigenetics -- a subfield of epigenetics that is central to the recent excitement. The focus lies on an ethnographic analysis of research practices that enable a particular lab group to study the impact of different levels of context, for example, changes in the social and material environment, on epigenetic modification and thus phenotypic variation. The article argues that changes in the practice of doing epigenetic biology contribute to a molecularisation of biography and milieu, suggest the configuration of somatic sociality and produce a different concept of the body: the embedded body. This article concludes with a brief discussion of customary biology as a potential new research agenda at the interface of material and social inquiry.},

abstract = {This special issue of Science, Technology, & Human Values critically explores a new stage in which the life sciences and biomedical practices have entered. This new stage is marked by postgenomic developments and an increased interest of life sciences in the everyday lives of people outside laboratories and clinical settings. Furthermore, particular attention is given to many chronic and degenerative disorders such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, or developmental disorders. These developments coincide---or have become entangled---with a new set of interests that an anthropologically inclined science and technology studies (STS) is bringing to the analyses of biomedical practices. An increased interest is observed in the anthropologically inclined STS in studying phenomena on different scales and in exploring fields that are not readily dominated by technoscientific rationality in practice. The introduction to the special issue examines briefly these developments and situates them in a broader genealogy of different movements that have taken place in the anthropologically inclined subfield of STS since the late 1970s and early 1980s.},

The analysis is based on focus group discussions and ethnographic interviews with transplant recipients, their relatives and waiting list patients in Sweden, Cyprus and Germany. Exploring our respondents' narratives we analytically differentiate between three levels of practices normalizing the post-transplantation experience: (1) a personal level, (2) a level of the intimate, and (3) a level of anonymous sociality. Our comparative perspective shows that sociocultural differences play a much greater role in interactive normalization practices (levels 2 and 3) than on the personal level (1), where universalized medical knowledge provides a framework that supersedes the role of cultural or social differences.},

abstract = {The article analyses practices, perceptions and political dramatizations of bone marrow donation in Cyprus. Based on empirical data from an ethnographic study on practices of organ and bone marrow transplantation in postcolonial Cyprus, forms of oppositional biopolitics are analysed that are not bound by the modern, étatist regime of governing populations but capitalize on new developments in biomedicine, on new political movements, as well as on transformations in the political sphere. These reconfigurations are interpreted as instances of an emerging bio-subpolitics that transcends national borders and produces new complexities, interrelations, associations and social forms that come into being alongside biomedicine. At the same time, these developments co-produce cosmopolitan citizens and new subjectivities, transcending nationally bound regimes of political deliberation and identification. These forms of biopolitics mobilize local historical experiences and take advantage of affordances provided by biomedical platforms operating on a global scale that make available an opportunity structure for a cosmopolitan bio-subpolitics.},

This volume sets out “thick comparison” as a means to revive “comparing” as a productive process in ethnographic work: a process that helps to revitalise the articulation work inherent in analytical ethnographies; to vary observer perspectives and point towards “blind spots;” to name and create “new things” and modes of empirical work and to give way to intensified dialogues between data analysis and theorizing.},

abstract = {This is the introductory chapter of the book, which provides discussion of attempts to use ethnographic methods in order to build objects of comparison and relate them to each other as a means of improving analytical clarity. Comparability is the result of the ethnographic inquiry, not its natural starting point. The authors in the book reflect the role of ethnographic comparison in putting complex worlds into words: they describe the process of and inquire about producing comparability, how they themselves as well as their respective fields get involved in this process, how this co-production succeeds and how it fails, how it meanders and how it becomes productive in a mode of doing comparison. Ethnographic comparison is analytical ethnography in a radical sense. This chapter presents an overview of how other chapters of the book are organised.},

abstract = {Recent findings in neuroscience have shown differential patterns in brain activity in response to similar stimuli and activities across cultural and social differences. This calls for a framework to understand how such differences may come to be implemented in brains and neurons. Based on strands of research in social anthropology, we argue that human practices are characterized by particular patterns, and that participating in these patterns orders how people perceive and act in particular group- and context-specific ways. This then leads to a particular patterning of neuronal processes that may be detected using e.g. brain imaging methods. We illustrate this through (a) a classical example of phoneme perception (b) recent work on performance in experimental game play. We then discuss these findings in the light of predictive models of brain function. We argue that a `culture as patterned practices' approach obviates a rigid nature-culture distinction, avoids the problems involved in conceptualizing `culture' as a homogenous grouping variable, and suggests that participating as a competent participant in particular practices may affect both the subjective (first person) experience and (third person) objective measures of behavior and brain activity.},

We agree with many of the points raised and merely reiterate three aspects of our position in order to reinforce the unique features of our notion of thick comparison: First, ethnography has an important role to play in social inquiry. Second, ethnographers appropriate fields by getting involved in them. This involvement enables the production of comparability, which we do not understand to be an inherent quality of the world. Third, producing comparability is an ongoing process at the heart of thick comparison. Its failure and limitations are productive.},

Fifty-two dialogues were transcribed and submitted to qualitative content analysis.; Results: Dietary advice and increased physical activity are mostly discussed during talks. Recommendations appear to be more individual if patients are given the chance to reflect on causes of their overweight during counseling talks.; Conclusions: A dialogue approach affects the strength and quality of weight loss counseling in primary care. However, physicians and overweight patients rarely agreed on weight loss goals during the physician--patient talks. Practical implications Patient centeredness, particularly the integration of patients' perceptions towards weight management, might be an important step towards improving weight counseling in primary care.},

Nowadays the concept circulates increasingly in the political, educational, and economical field and in the media and has already crossed-over the geographical boundaries to whith it had been applied first. Taking knowledge society as a representation serving to interpret and shape social practice, the paper outlines from an interdisciplinary perspective academic debates on the concepts and on notions of knowledge. The paper argues that certain paradigms of social progress and of science as inherent in knowledge society prevent "users" of the concept from considering contesting notions of knowledge, increasing forms of incoherent knowledge, and the accelerating devaluation of knowledge.},

abstract = {This article challenges the assumption that patient autonomy can best be assured by providing proper information through formalized procedures such as informed consent. We suggest that to understand and consider laypeople's ways of knowing and decision making, one has to move beyond the information paradigm and take into account a much broader context. Concretely, we investigate informed consent in connection with donating skin tissue remaining from medically indicated surgery. We use interviews with patients and observation protocols to analyse patients' perceptions and ways of making sense of informed consent beyond its bioethical ideal. Patients situate themselves in a larger system of solidarity, enrol in an overall positive image of science as a linear process of innovation oriented towards output, and simultaneously take a pragmatic stance towards hospital routines as a necessary passage point towards receiving good treatment. Because informed consent is one of the central articulations between the biomedical system and society, we conclude by reflecting on the consequences of our findings on a socio-political level.},

abstract = {Biomedizinische Forschung gewann in den letzten Jahrzehnten besonders in westlichen Gesellschaften verstärkt an Bedeutung.
