Credits and Certificate

Participants will receive 6 ECTS credit points if they attend regularly (at least 80% attendance) and successfully complete the required assignments. Upon completion of the course, Humboldt-Universität issues a Certificate and Transcript of Records.

Description
This course is addressing students and practitioners who are passionate about global impact to explore how societies recover from crisis, war, and dictatorship, and evolve into vibrant and resilient democracies through the power of human rights and international law.  
  • Participate in dynamic sessions on transitional justice, oral history, and contemporary challenges like climate change, migration, and the resurgence of authoritarianism.
  • Uncover the secrets of how democratic transitions (Transitology) and robust institutions are built and strengthened through transparency, accountability, and civic participation, all measured against global standards
  • Investigate how Transitional Justice and Human Rights Law, political, and societal measures commemorate the past, pay tribute to victims, and fuel the transformation from injustice to a rule-of-law society
  • Critically examine the influence of social media and artificial intelligence on modern democratic processes, gaining skills to analyze and address the crises of today.

Friday-Saturday: 9:00am – 4:00pm
 
Location: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The classroom is centrally located in Berlin.

Student Profile
This course is designed for students of all levels and professionals who are interested in exploring the ways in which societies can recover from crises, wars, or dictatorships, and evolve into vibrant and resilient democracies through the power of human rights and international law. Participants should have a background in law or social science and humanities, and an interest in theories of democracy, international human rights law, transitology and transitional justice.
Participants need to be at least 18 years old.
 
Language Requirement:
This course is taught in English, including readings in English. For the understanding of the texts and the discussions in class a language level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is required.

Dr. Anja Mihr

Dr. Anja Mihr(Ph.D.) is a political scientist, consultant, senior lecturer, writer and researcher for International Human Rights Law, Governance, Public Policy, and Transitional Justice/Transitology focusing on Eurasia. She is the Founder and Program Director of the Center on Governance through Human Rights at the Berlin Governance Platform in Berlin, Germany. She has held professorships at OSCE Academy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, at the Willy-Brandt School of Public Policy, Erfurt University, Germany, and the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM), University of Utrecht, Netherlands. In 2023, she was awarded the International Prize for Human Rights Education by UCCHR in New York.
